Sergey Ivanov, former defense minister and presidential special representative, has died


He was 73. Ivanov’s death was reported by the VTB United League, of which he was honorary president.


Ivanov was one of Vladimir Putin’s closest associates, having served with him back in the Leningrad KGB. Even before Putin came to power, Ivanov held the post of Security Council secretary, then became defense minister in 2001 and remained in that position until 2007. For some time Ivanov was considered Putin’s successor, but Dmitry Medvedev ultimately became the successor.


Under Medvedev, Ivanov was deputy prime minister and head of the presidential administration; after Putin’s return, he became the president’s special representative for environmental issues.
