Today is the Day in Support of Victims of Torture. We recall the stories of a comedian, a mathematician, and an artist

Torture in Russia is not a set of isolated cases, but a widespread practice. This is shown by data from the Committee Against Torture. At the same time, torture victims are often deprived of rights: cases of violence are covered up, and holding the perpetrators accountable is far from always possible.

Here are just three stories of political prisoners who were tortured:

➡️ Comedian Artemy Ostanin was beaten with batons, a sandbag, and a stun gun.

➡️ Mathematician Azat Miftakhov was tied up with tape in IK-18 in Kharp, beaten with a hammer, and shocked with electricity.

➡️ Rostov artist Viktor Kirman was beaten by security officers to force a confession.

Achieving a fair investigation in these cases takes months and possibly years. But political prisoners can be supported right now by writing them a letter.
