Russia’s Foreign Ministry said that it hopes for the extradition of ICC prosecutor Karim Khan after his suspension from office (in Russia he was convicted in absentia)

The Russian Foreign Ministry published a statement in connection with the suspension from office of International Criminal Court (ICC) chief prosecutor Karim Khan.

The ministry notes that Khan will now no longer “enjoy immunity as an international official in states parties to the Rome Statute.”

We hope this will help secure his extradition to Russia so that he can be held accountable for attempting to criminally prosecute knowingly innocent people and for an attempt on persons enjoying international protection, the Foreign Ministry said.

In 2023, at Khan’s request, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin and children’s ombudswoman Maria Lvova-Belova. After that, Khan was placed on the wanted list in Russia, and in December 2025 the Moscow City Court sentenced him in absentia to 15 years on charges of unlawfully persecuting Russian citizens.
