Crimean businessman sent to pretrial detention in “fake news” case
The Butyrsky District Court of Moscow has remanded 39-year-old entrepreneur Sergei G. from Simferopol into custody. He owns several tobacco shops, the outlet noticed by Ostorozhno, Novosti reported.
It is noted that Sergei had barely spoken publicly about politics and mostly wrote about English football. Nevertheless, on June 24 the man left a comment under a post by a Moscow news channel about 14 drones shot down over the capital:
“So after all, who destroyed whom? Times are such that at this point nothing would surprise me anymore.”
About a month later, Sergei’s home was searched, and soon afterward he was sent to pretrial detention on charges of spreading “fake news” about the Russian military. The outlet does not specify whether that comment was the only piece of evidence in the case against Sergei.
