At meeting with fleet commanders, Putin orders protection of Kaliningrad Region

On Navy Day, Vladimir Putin arrived in St. Petersburg, where he heard reports from the commanders of Russia’s fleets. One of the reports concerned the security of Kaliningrad Region. Putin commented on it as follows:

“Sergei Vladimirovich [Lipilin — admiral, commander of the Baltic Fleet], you also mentioned Kaliningrad Region. Without question, if any threats are created for Kaliningrad Region, the security of Kaliningrad Region will be ensured by all the capabilities of the Russian Federation. But, of course, the Baltic Fleet must be on the front line. I know that the corresponding tasks have been set before you. I hope they are being carried out properly.”

Putin also commented on attempts by “ill-wishers to influence our fleet”: “we need to act carefully, but decisively, just as piracy should be fought”:

“I want to draw your attention to the fact that in such cases, of course, one must act carefully within the framework of international maritime law, but decisively, as one must fight piracy and pirates. You know, the minister spoke about this, and surely the chief of the General Staff as well, and the corresponding commands should have come from the fleet commander. So we understand each other, and we count on your effective work in this area, in covering our fleet.”

🔵Against the backdrop of Putin’s official visit to St. Petersburg for Navy Day, local residents complained about disruptions to mobile internet and communications, with the peak of the outages coming at around two o’clock in the afternoon. It had also previously become known that for the second year in a row, the city would not hold a Navy Day parade.
