Tuapse authorities banned women from cleaning fuel oil off beaches

This was reported by a Kommersant correspondent who was present at a meeting between the Tuapse administration, Emergency Situations Ministry representatives, and volunteers.

The authorities explained the ban as being due to “concern for women’s reproductive health” and asked that the requirement be treated “with understanding.”

According to the Kommersant journalist, in response some female volunteers said that they would “decide for themselves what to do with their reproductive health.”

A state of emergency is in effect in Tuapse because of a spill of petroleum products after Ukrainian drone attacks. The authorities promised they would clean the beaches of fuel oil by June 1, the start of the resort season. Environmentalists believe this is an impossible task. According to specialists’ estimates, the coastline in the Tuapse area is polluted by petroleum product discharges for about 60 kilometers.
