Russia significantly expanded the list of professions for alternative service (but it’s still not easy to get it)

The Labor Ministry has updated the list of professions for alternative civilian service in Russia.

The list increased by almost 100 positions, from 271 to 363 professions. The number of organizations where alternative service can be performed grew from 1,798 to 1,927.

Among the new professions added to the list are, for example: “diver,” “gas welder,” “costumer,” “forest firefighter,” “piano and grand piano tuner,” “turner,” “rigger,” “electrician,” “zoologist,” “meteorologist,” and others.

Alternative civilian service (ACS) is work “in the interests of society and the state” that a person performs instead of compulsory military service. It is guaranteed by the Russian Constitution to people whose beliefs or religion are incompatible with military service. Some representatives of Indigenous small-numbered peoples are also entitled to it. In practice, military enlistment offices often deny conscripts the right to perform ACS for formal reasons.
