Putin fears a coup, and a conflict has been brewing among the security services — a report by Western intelligence

🔵 Since March 2026, the Federal Protective Service (FSO) has significantly stepped up security measures around Vladimir Putin because of fears of a conspiracy or an attempted coup, according to a report by one European intelligence service. The document was given to Important Stories by a source in that country’s government, and we were able to independently confirm part of the information.

According to the report, the FSO has significantly cut down the list of places Putin is allowed to visit: he has stopped traveling to his residences in Valdai and the Moscow region.

Putin spends most of his time in bunkers, for example in Krasnodar Krai. Meanwhile, his press service publishes video materials prepared in advance.

Visitors to the presidential administration have been required to undergo two levels of screening. Staff who work near Putin have been banned from using mobile phones with internet access, as well as from riding public transportation. Video surveillance systems have been installed in the homes of cooks, photographers, and guards.

The FSO’s powers have also grown significantly. They have begun carrying out large-scale inspections involving dog handlers. Service officers have been stationed along the Moscow River to respond to possible drone attacks. Internet shutdowns in some parts of the capital are also linked to the FSO’s work.

🔵 Putin is said in the report to fear not so much Ukrainian attacks as a conspiracy by Russian political elites. Among other things, he considers the possibility that an assassination attempt could be carried out with the help of drones.

🔵 Successful Ukrainian assassination attempts on senior Russian officers in the rear, in turn, have led to conflict among representatives of the security agencies, the document says.

In December 2025, Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, FSB Director Alexander Bortnikov, and Rosgvardiya head Viktor Zolotov got into an argument right at a security meeting.

Putin had to calm the participants in the discussion down. He later assigned the FSO to guard Gerasimov and ten more senior Defense Ministry officers.
