Igor Pestrikov, a former co-owner of the Solikamsk Magnesium Plant (SMZ), has requested political asylum in France. This emerged from documents filed with the High Court of England and Wales, Vedomosti reports.

The court was hearing Pestrikov’s claim against Alexander Gutin, the former chairman of SMZ’s board of directors. Pestrikov sought compensation for his shares in SMZ and the Lovozero Mining and Processing Plant, which had been seized from him.

According to the case documents, Pestrikov described himself in court as a political refugee. He applied for asylum in France, but his application had not yet been considered when the court issued its decision.

The Solikamsk Magnesium Plant was nationalized at the request of Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office. Pestrikov himself was sentenced in absentia in Russia to eight years in a penal colony on an embezzlement charge.
