Finland sentences two sailors from vessel that damaged cables in the Gulf of Finland. One of them is Russian

A court in Helsinki handed down the sentences, Yle and Reuters report. The captain of the Fitburg, Russian citizen Andrey Maksimenko, received a prison sentence of three years and six months. The boatswain, Azerbaijani citizen Vusal Medzhidov, was sentenced to two years and ten months. They were also ordered to pay the cost of repairing the cables.

The Fitburg damaged cables running from Finland to Estonia along the Baltic Sea floor in late 2025. At the time, the vessel was traveling from St. Petersburg to Israel. Finnish authorities detained it after the cables were damaged.

The court found that the defendants had acted deliberately: the Fitburg dragged its anchor along the seabed for approximately 130 kilometers.
