Politician Vyacheslav Maltsev once declared November 5, 2017, the day of a revolution in Russia. Nothing happened that day, and Maltsev was granted political asylum in France long ago, but the FSB and other security forces continue to persecute his supporters nine years later.
Since 2023, there has been a steadily growing wave of criminal cases against people who donated to Maltsev (most often through the services YooMoney and DonationAlerts). According to a Mediazona count, at least 91 cases over such donations have been opened in Russia in three years, with donors prosecuted under laws against financing extremism and terrorism.
Read Mediazona’s new investigation to find out how security forces identify donors, who is at risk, and what prison sentences they face:
No Revolution, but Donors Still Face Prosecution
Russia has opened at least 91 cases over donations to Maltsev.
The revolution never happened. The prosecutions did.
