Russian publishers have started hiring censors to check books before publication, Spiegel claims .

According to sources in the book publishing industry cited by the German outlet, it has become "common practice" at Russian publishing houses to bring in experts who check books for "sensitive" passages before publication.

According to Spiegel's sources, during such a review all fragments that may prove "potentially problematic" are removed, and topics concerning sexual orientation and gender identity are excluded entirely.

How the work of these "experts" is organized, in what format they are brought in for censorship, and which books were edited this way is not specified.
