The Russian embassy in Ghana responded to our banners. With lies, as usual.
Informational banners from the “I Want to Live” and “I Want to Find” projects and stoprussianrecruiters.org have appeared in Ghana's capital, warning of the risks of Russian recruitment and explaining how Africans can save their lives.
The Russian diplomatic mission claims that no one is deceiving Africans and that “no credible international body has provided convincing and verified evidence to the contrary.”
That means the embassy is accusing Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa of lying. In February 2026, he said that many Africans fighting for Russia were victims of deception, lured on the dark web with promises of employment.
“They have no security background. They have no military experience. They have not been trained,” Ablakwa said. “They were simply lured and deceived, and then sent to the front line.”
It is also hard to believe that Russian diplomats in Ghana are so incompetent that they missed the report by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine, established by the UN Human Rights Council. The commission found that Russia had fraudulently recruited citizens of at least 29 countries into its army. The list includes Ghana and 10 other African countries. Foreigners were promised high-paying civilian jobs, but after arriving in Russia they were forced to sign military contracts and sent to the front. Especially for the Russian embassy in Ghana, here is the link to the UN report:
We have a few questions for the Russian embassy in Ghana.
1. If everything was voluntary, why did you stop recruiting Ghanaians? And why do you continue to send citizens of Zimbabwe, Uganda, Burundi and other countries on the continent to the front?
2. What has happened to the 335 Ghanaian citizens who signed contracts with the Russian Armed Forces? We published a list of 147 of them back in 2025, and since then you have more than doubled the number recruited. Have you returned them home to their families?
3. What has happened to the 85 Ghanaian citizens who were killed and whose names we published this summer? Do their relatives know what happened to them? Have you returned their bodies to their homeland?
4. Several hundred foreigners recruited by Russia in 59 countries around the world are being held captive in Ukraine. They include dozens of Africans from 18 African countries, three of them from Ghana. All of them have been in captivity for several years, and Russia refuses to take them back in exchanges. Why have you abandoned these people while continuing to recruit more and more Africans?
The embassy will not answer these questions. That is precisely why we are putting up the banners: so that citizens of Ghana and other African countries learn the truth before they sign a contract, rather than on the front line.
❗️Do not believe promises of high-paying jobs in Russia. If someone is trying to recruit you or you have already ended up in the ranks of the Russian forces, contact the “I Want to Live” project. We will help you stay alive and surrender safely. If your relative has gone missing after being recruited, write to the “I Want to Find” project.

Diplomats overlook report on deceptive recruitment
Russia's embassy in Ghana denies Africans are deceived, despite the findings of a UN commission.
The diplomats found the report inconvenient.
