About 800 Peruvian citizens are fighting against Ukraine in the ranks of the Russian occupation army.

Peruvian human rights activists dealing with the illegal recruitment of the country’s citizens by Russians have such data, CNN writes. At the same time, Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs told journalists that it had sent 247 requests to the Russian government on this issue, demanding the immediate and safe return of their compatriots to their homeland. According to the Peruvian authorities, all of them left the country “without proper authorization.”

For its part, the Russian side cynically responded to the requests by saying that it “deeply respects the decision of foreign citizens to participate in the defense of Russian sovereignty and security.”

It also became known that in the investigation launched by the Peruvian authorities last month, there are 36 complaints from citizens claiming that their relatives or friends were deceived into signing a contract with the Russian army and sent to the front in Ukraine. The Peruvian side classifies this as human trafficking, which is not far from the truth.

The Russian recruitment scheme in Peru is familiar: men are offered jobs as cooks, security guards, or construction workers with generous pay. Upon arrival in Russia, they are made to sign documents in Russian, which turn out to be a standard contract with the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. As a result, these Latin Americans end up on the front line and do not even get paid for it.

“They never told him that he was going to war, that he would have to sacrifice his life, and that he would not be paid. Otherwise, he would not have gone there,” the wife of one of the Peruvians who ended up at the front, contact with whom was lost several months ago, told journalists.
