Russian authorities declared a Cuban mercenary being held in Ukrainian captivity dead.

Gonzalez Turcas is one of thousands of Cubans recruited and brought thousands of kilometers away to take part in the war on Russia’s side. We previously published a list of 1,028 Cuban citizens serving in the Russian Armed Forces:

In the Russian army, Cubans, like other foreigners, were used as "can openers" - soldiers sent into the assault first so fire would be opened on them and the firing positions of the AFU could be identified. Gonzalez was one such "can opener" on the Kupiansk front, but he was lucky enough to survive and be taken prisoner. Less than 30 days passed from the signing of his contract to his capture - the Russian Armed Forces do not bother themselves with real training for foreign mercenaries.

Despite the fact that Gonzalez was captured back in the summer of 2025, and during this time he repeatedly gave interviews, was visited by representatives of the ICRC, and had his letters passed on to his family, the Russian authorities recognized him as dead. His sister, trying to get the Russian authorities to include her brother on the exchange lists, has gotten nothing but a brush-off, because the Russian Ministry of Defense simply wrote Gonzalez off as dead. In response to her inquiry to the Russian embassy in Cuba, she received an official reply saying that Gonzalez had died.
