The European Union removed Russian sable pelts from the list of goods banned from import into the bloc’s countries. The ban, which had been in effect since April, was lifted as part of the 21st sanctions package, Euractiv writes.

The European Commission explained the decision by saying that Russia effectively dominates the global sable fur market, so European producers have virtually no alternative suppliers. “Apparently, obtaining them anywhere else is very difficult,” a senior EU official told the publication.

Italy and Greece sought the exemption of sable pelts from the ban — the two main buyers of Russian sable pelts in the European Union.

Finished sable fur products are still banned from being imported into the EU from Russia under sanctions on luxury goods. Sable fur is one of the most expensive in the world. In 2024, the most expensive coat made from this fur in Russia was bought for 34 million rubles.
