Yandex Maps hid at least 119 military sites on Russia’s western border

Swedish broadcaster SVT, together with journalists from Denmark, Norway, and Estonia, compiled a map of 119 sites in western Russia hidden on Yandex Maps.

The investigation says that virtually all of the hidden sites are connected in one way or another to Russia’s military sphere or military industry.

SVT, citing American nuclear weapons expert Matt Korda, who studied censorship at Yandex, writes that attempts to hide sites on online maps can trigger the so-called “Streisand effect” and draw even more attention to those areas.
