Lawyer Dmitry Zakhvatov was sentenced in absentia to 21 years in a maximum-security penal colony. He defended Pussy Riot and Marina Ovsyannikova

The 2nd Western District Military Court sentenced lawyer Dmitry Zakhvatov in absentia to 21 years in a maximum-security penal colony, reports Pervy Otdel.

He was found guilty, among other things, of facilitating “terrorist activity” and publicly calling for activity directed against state security.

According to the investigation, Zakhvatov raised funds in support of the Azov Regiment, the Kastus Kalinouski Regiment, and the 92nd Separate Assault Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In addition, he was charged over the publication of a video address in 2023 in which he called helping the Ukrainian army “the duty of every normal person.”

Dmitry Zakhvatov had previously defended Pussy Riot and former Channel One employee Marina Ovsyannikova, among others.
