“This is a Russian warship speaking. Stay away.” A Russian corvette drove Greenpeace investigators away from a “shadow fleet” tanker in the Baltic

Mike Mahrarens, head of investigations at Greenpeace Nordic, told The Insider that the Russian corvette Soobrazitelny intervened in the monitoring of the “shadow fleet” tanker Kira K, which was carrying more than 100 thousand tons of Russian oil in the Baltic Sea.

According to Mahrarens, while they were documenting the tanker’s passage through the Fehmarn Belt strait, their vessel was first approached by the German coast guard ship Bayreuth, and then by Russian corvette 531.

“Today I had the chance to see with my own eyes how much tension the shadow fleet creates in the Baltic Sea. (...) The corvette was not escorting Kira K from the start, but came to its aid from the east at high speed. We knew that Russian Navy ships were in the area precisely for such purposes. Hearing over the radio: ‘This is Russian warship 531 speaking. Stay away from Kira K’ made it especially vivid.”
