US senators have agreed to vote on tough new sanctions against Russia


A group of US senators announced that they had reached an agreement on a bill that would allow Donald Trump to impose additional substantial restrictions on major buyers of Russian energy resources.


A procedural vote on it is scheduled for Tuesday evening.


According to the text published this week, the bill grants the US president the authority to impose tariffs on the top five buyers of Russian crude oil and natural gas, as well as the five countries that most strongly help Russia evade energy sanctions. The White House chief would be able to impose an additional tariff of 100% against them.


The main potential targets are China and India. In addition, the document provides for the possibility of setting a 500% tariff on Russian goods imported into the United States.
