Political prisoner Azat Miftakhov reports torture in prison colony, The Insider says
Political prisoner, mathematician, and anarchist Azat Miftakhov has reported torture he was subjected to in the Polar Owl prison colony in the settlement of Kharp, The Insider writes.
According to the outlet, Miftakhov was beaten, threatened with rape, and tortured with electric shocks. Prisoners cooperating with the administration and Federal Penitentiary Service staff took part in the torture. It is reported that Miftakhov was being forced to obey orders from the prison colony’s administration.
The Insider writes that Polar Owl is considered one of Russia’s most “remote and harsh” prison colonies and is referred to as a “torture” colony. In the neighboring Polar Wolf colony, also located in Kharp, Alexei Navalny was killed.
🔵Azat Miftakhov was detained in 2019 in a hooliganism case: he was accused of allegedly smashing a window at a United Russia office with his anarchist acquaintances and throwing a smoke bomb inside. In 2021, he was sentenced to six years in a penal colony.
In September 2023, a court arrested Miftakhov in a new case, for “justifying terrorism.” In March 2024, he was sentenced to four years in a maximum-security penal colony. In his final statement, Miftakhov said he had twice been convicted on fabricated evidence.
