Finland will cut off some of the internet cables between Russia and Europe, Kommersant writes, citing sources.

Finnish company Fingrid told Russian telecom operators that from 2027 it will stop maintaining the power line poles on which fiber-optic communication lines are suspended. The reason for this decision is the halt of Russian electricity supplies to Finland in 2022 (for Finnish power engineers, maintaining the poles solely for the communication lines placed on them has become unprofitable).

According to Kommersant, about 60-70% of foreign traffic goes through transit via Finland. Also, up to 30% of all communication lines between Russia and Finland may be located on these poles.

The newspaper's sources believe there will be no noticeable deterioration in connectivity, but the load on the remaining lines will increase, which could lead to delays when connecting to foreign resources, especially in northwestern Russia.
