Nearly 50 individuals and organizations were punished for Instagram and Facebook logos after Meta was designated extremist

Police filed at least 50 administrative cases against people and organizations over the logos of Instagram and Facebook, according to Verstka.

In 47 cases, fines (typically 1,000–2,000 rubles) and arrests from one to 15 days were imposed.

The cases were initiated under Article 20.3 of the Administrative Code (public display of extremist symbols) after Meta was declared an “extremist organization” in March 2022. 35 cases involve Instagram symbols, seven Facebook logos, four both, and in four cases only Meta symbols are mentioned.

The largest number of cases was recorded in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug (18). Among those fined were five kindergartens, a children’s arts school, a rural cultural center, a beauty salon, a tanning studio, two cafes, and a food delivery website.

Nearly a third of all cases were opened in Dagestan, where law enforcement conducted “preventive inspections” of retail outlets, checking for banned symbols. At least 13 cases involved Instagram logos, and 11 business owners in Dagestanskie Ogni were fined.

🟦 Meanwhile, some Russian government websites still display Meta symbols. For example, Instagram and Facebook logos remain on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry and on the website of the Russian embassy in the United States.
