In Orenburg region, an escaped soldier has been detained on suspicion of killing a police officer

A suspect in the killing of a police officer has been detained in Orenburg region, TASS reports, citing the press service of Russia’s Investigative Committee.

According to the Investigative Committee, the person who opened fire on police officers on April 16, killing one Interior Ministry employee and wounding three others, was Private Sergei Basalayev, who had been on the federal wanted list.

Basalayev, the Investigative Committee’s press service said, “left his unit without authorization during the mobilization period” (mobilization was actively carried out in September-October 2022, but a decree formally ending mobilization has still not been signed).

Basalayev is accused of leaving his unit without authorization during the mobilization period, attempting to kill law enforcement officers, murder, and attempted murder. The court, the Investigative Committee said, authorized his arrest.
