❗️We are publishing a list of citizens of the Republic of South Africa who signed contracts with the Russian Armed Forces.

At the beginning of this week, South African Army Chief Lieutenant General Lawrence Mbatha is in Moscow discussing the expansion of cooperation between the armies of the two countries with the Russian military leadership. It is likely that during the visit they also did not overlook Russia’s illegal recruitment of citizens of the Republic of South Africa to participate in the war against Ukraine.

Following the talks in Moscow, the sides declared their intention to strengthen interaction between the ground forces, implement joint projects, and develop military cooperation. The Russian side separately thanked the South African leadership for its position toward Russia.

Behind the fine words about partnership lies a different reality. For several years now, Russian recruiters have been actively searching for South African citizens, offering them “jobs,” “security contracts,” or highly paid service. In practice, many of them end up on the front in Ukraine, where they are used as ordinary infantry and suffer heavy losses. We are publishing a list of 69 South African citizens who fought or continue to fight as part of the Russian Armed Forces against Ukraine. At least 10 of them have been killed.

In February 2026, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa officially welcomed home the South Africans who had been deceitfully drawn into the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Russia readily talks with African states about military cooperation and “equal partnership,” but at the same time views the citizens of these countries as a source of cheap “meat for assaults.”

Citizens of South Africa and other African countries should remember: any job offers in Russia may end with being sent to the front in Ukraine.
