The IOC has lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee; a decision on the use of symbols will be made later

A press release by the organization states that the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has provisionally lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), which had been in effect since October 12, 2023.

“The decision was taken following a careful analysis conducted by the IOC Legal Affairs Commission, taking into account that the ROC no longer includes within its membership regional sports organizations in territories under the jurisdiction of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine. In addition, the ROC confirmed that it is not conducting and will not conduct any activities in these territories,” the statement says.

The ROC was suspended for including in its membership the sports councils of four Ukrainian regions annexed by Russia. Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev reported their removal from the organization in April.

“In view of the start of the qualification period for both the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 and the Winter Youth Olympic Games Dolomiti Valtellina 2028, and the need to ensure equal access to these competitions for all athletes, the IOC Executive Board has decided to cancel the conditions of participation that it had recommended to International Federations and organizers of international sports events on 28 February 2022 and 28 March 2023 with regard to Russian athletes and teams, including protective measures,” the IOC release says.

It also notes that the organization will not hold events in Russia and will not invite Russian state or other officials to its events.

“The IOC will decide on the display of the Russian flag, anthem, colors, or any other symbols at the Olympic Games at the appropriate time,” the statement says.

Suspension Ends, Symbols Stay Pending

The IOC restored the ROC, but parked the flag and anthem.

Readmission cleared, symbols still stuck in paperwork.
