The Federal Tax Service has started asking unemployed Russians to explain how they bought expensive cars and yachts

RBC reports this, citing lawyers and materials from one of the tax inspectorates.

In addition to the origin of their income, the Federal Tax Service (FNS) is also requesting written explanations and documents regarding the rental of the acquired property and the income received from it.

“The idea is this: please account for it, file 3-NDFL tax declarations, declare the income, and pay taxes,” Dmitry Lomakin, director of the law firm Formula of Consent, whose client received one of these tax notices, told RBC.

In his view, this is how the FNS is “testing a mechanism for imputing income on the basis of expenses.” Residents of Moscow and the Moscow region, Perm Krai, Tatarstan, and St. Petersburg have received such requests.

“To describe the situation in plain language, a citizen is not obliged to remember in which drawer he found the money to buy yachts, palaces, and a Bentley, or how long that money had been lying there,” tax attorney Ivan Yagolovich noted.
