“Learn how normal guys relax.” Wounded veterans of the “SMO” are discharged early from hospitals because of alcohol, drugs, and fights
“Violation of the rules” is a common reason for discharging wounded Russian soldiers from military hospitals, Verstka has found.
While undergoing long-term treatment, some veterans of the “SMO” bring alcohol and drugs into their wards, start fights, get into conflicts, or look for romantic relationships with staff — it is not possible to fully bring this under control.
“They discharged a new guy, late at night. I hope he at least has somewhere to go. I tell them every single damn day. Fine, you drank. Hide the bottles, I’ll come and take them away so nobody sees them,” orderly Ulyana shares about her workdays.
“One guy got wasted here, ran naked around the grounds, screaming,” recalls soldier Nikita, who has a serious spinal injury. “Of course, that’s immediate discharge. Discharge and back to the unit.”
Using one of Moscow’s largest medical institutions for the military — War Veterans Hospital No. 2 — as an example, Verstka describes what life is like in a hospital where a thousand Russians returned from the front are trying to coexist with each other and with their new reality. And why staff are sometimes “afraid to enter the wards” in the evenings, on weekends, and on holidays.
