Why does the drop in the index matter?


When the index falls, it means the shares of major companies are getting cheaper. Investors are selling them because they have less faith in the future profits of businesses. And behind those companies are stores, banks, factories, extraction, logistics, technology, and jobs. If the market falls for a long time and hard, businesses start acting cautiously: they invest less, postpone new projects, cut spending, and hire people more slowly.


Right now the market is showing that investors expect tougher conditions: high rates, sanctions pressure, weak demand, export problems, and falling corporate profits.
