Russia to make a film about the son of a CIA deputy director killed in the war against Ukraine. Money for the picture was requested from the Cinema Fund

Preparations are underway in Russia to shoot the film "Volunteer," which will tell the story of American Michael Gloss, the son of a CIA deputy director, who was killed during combat operations against Ukraine. The project was presented at a pitch session at the Cinema Fund on July 7, Verstka noted.

“We want to tell our story through the relationship between the American and the film’s main character, Senior Sergeant Nikolai Privalov. To show the humanity of the Russian soldier, and the American’s disagreement with global policy toward Russia,” said the film’s producer Maksim Korolyov.

According to him, the filmmakers want to show an “intelligent truth” and “intelligent patriotism” — “without hysteria.” And through the American character they intend to “try to enter foreign markets”. Shooting for "Volunteer" is planned to begin in the summer of 2027 and production is to be completed in the spring of 2028.

The money for the film was requested from the Cinema Fund by the company Kinostruktura. It is a young studio established in September 2023. It is wholly owned by Alfiya Kaftannikova. From at least 2016 to 2018, she was employed at the VVP Alliance film studio, a stake in which at that time was owned by Albert Bakov — the son-in-law of director Nikita Mikhalkov.

💜Michael Gloss is the son of CIA Deputy Director for Digital Innovation Juliane Gloss. In 2023, he dropped out of school and set off traveling. In the autumn of that same year, he arrived in Russia and signed a contract with the Defense Ministry. In April 2024, Gloss was killed near Chasiv Yar, Important Stories wrote.

💜In August 2025, Vladimir Putin passed the Order of Courage to Gloss’s parents through U.S. special envoy Steven Witkoff. At the end of that same year, a monument to the American was erected in Donetsk, and DPR head Denis Pushilin proposed making a film about him.
