Political prisoner mathematician Azat Miftakhov was able to report brutal torture in the penal colony in Kharp. He named his tormentors: FSIN employees
Political prisoner, mathematician, and anarchist Azat Miftakhov described the torture he was subjected to after arriving at the Polar Owl penal colony in the settlement of Kharp in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. Through its own channels, The Insider obtained Miftakhov’s detailed account of what happened to him on April 21 in Polar Owl, including the names of the tormentors among FSIN employees.
Miftakhov was beaten on the heels with a wooden hammer, threatened with rape and being dunked into sewage, and tortured with electric shocks. Prisoners cooperating with the administration and FSIN employees took part in the abuse, including Mikhail Sobolev and Pavel Kiselyov.
The torture took place in the colony’s operations department, which prisoners call the Lubyanka. Miftakhov was ordered to obey all instructions from the administration, including cleaning the toilets used by colony staff.
