Political prisoner Vladimir Yarotsky, convicted over a picture with Putin, has died in a prison colony. The penal colony administration claims he took his own life

The death of the 41-year-old man in IK-9 in Khadyzhensk was reported by the Politzek-Info channel. Later, SOTAvision confirmed this information, citing a letter from another political prisoner, Aleksandr Nozdrinov, who is also serving his sentence in this colony.

According to the official version, Yarotsky died by suicide. At the same time, he had repeatedly reported pressure from the colony administration.

In 2023, a criminal case was opened against Yarotsky under the article on desecrating symbols of military glory because of an image posted on VKontakte depicting Vladimir Putin. In it, he is posing for an artist whose canvas shows, instead of a portrait, a male genital organ wrapped in a St. George ribbon. For this, the man was sentenced to a year and a half in a penal colony.

Later, a charge under the article on military “fakes” was added because of Yarotsky’s post about the number of Russian servicemen killed and missing in the war with Ukraine.

In May 2025, the Krasnodar Regional Court sentenced him to five and a half years in a penal colony.

Memorial considers Yarotsky a political prisoner.
