Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov keeps touring African countries whose citizens end up in the Russian occupation army as mercenaries. Yesterday the official visited Niger, where he held talks with the country's leadership as well as the foreign ministers of Burkina Faso and Mali.

We do not know whether Lavrov's African counterparts raised the issue of recruiting their citizens for someone else's war, but we do know for certain about Nigeriens, Burkinabes, and Malians who signed contracts with the Russian Armed Forces. Moreover, we know the names of some of them, and today we are publishing them.

We want to stress separately that there are far more African mercenaries from these countries than 101 people. Just as there are more dead among them than the 16 whose deaths we know about for certain. Literally on the same day after the publication of the list of recruited Ethiopian citizens, relatives of missing citizens of that country began writing to us.

Despite growing pressure from many donor countries of mercenaries, the Kremlin has no intention of winding down the criminal practice of luring poor people from all over the world into the war against Ukraine. The shortage of “assault meat” has to be covered somehow, and foreigners are cheap and convenient expendable material. Recruiting them costs Russia next to nothing, they are easy to deceive, and no one will bear responsibility for their deaths.

☝️ We remind citizens of foreign states: participation in the war on the side of the Russian army carries a high risk of death or severe injury. If someone is trying to recruit you to take part in combat against Ukraine, or if you have already ended up among Russian troops, contact the “I Want to Live” project. We will help you stay alive and surrender safely.

Diplomacy Tours While Recruitment Keeps Moving

Lavrov met Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali, whose citizens are recruited.

Talks travel well when recruitment does too.
