Putin orders universities to introduce a mandatory course on Russian as the state language
This follows from the list of instructions approved after the June 2 meeting of the Presidential Council for the Implementation of State Policy in the Sphere of Support for the Russian Language and the Languages of the Peoples of the Russian Federation, the Kremlin website reports.
"The Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education, taking into account previously issued instructions, is to ensure the inclusion of the discipline (module) 'Russian as the State Language' in the updated federal state standards of higher education (the socio-humanitarian part of the 'fundamental core')," it says.
In his speech at the meeting of the Council on Language Policy, Vladimir Putin noted that the course will cover, among other things, the constitutional status of the Russian language and issues of Russia's language policy.
