The 24-year-old woman arrested by the FSB over surveillance of a high-ranking Russian military officer in Moscow was watching a residential building 600 meters from the General Staff

The FSB reported the detention in Moscow of a woman the agency described as an accomplice in preparing an assassination attempt on a high-ranking Russian military officer. According to the security service, acting on instructions from a Ukrainian handler, she rented an apartment in March, installed video cameras there for surveillance, and transmitted the video feed to Ukrainian special services.

The law enforcement agency did not name the detainee, but published оперативное video. Based on the photo and the place of birth mentioned in the video, Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, The Insider established that the detainee is named Valeria Naryzhnaya. She was born in 2001 and will turn 25 on September 6.

◾️ The Insider identified the place where, according to the FSB, Naryzhnaya lived and carried out surveillance of the military officer by the photographs published from the apartment. From the window in those shots, building 11 on Novy Arbat, where the Detsky Mir store is located, can be seen. From that angle it was possible to establish that the rented apartment was in building 10 on Novy Arbat.

◾️ The building where, according to the security service, the high-ranking military officer whom Naryzhnaya was watching lived is shown in the оперативное video in screenshots from the surveillance camera installed in the window of her apartment. It is building 18 on Bolshaya Molchanovka. The distance from it to the building of the Russian General Staff is about 660 m.

◾️ In the video, Naryzhnaya is detained in daylight while walking her dog. The next footage published by the FSB was shot after dark: people whose faces are covered with masks lead Naryzhnaya out of a car and take her into a building.The Insider established that this building is on Bolshoy Kiselny Lane and belongs to the FSB. It is not publicly marked in any way, but The Insider knows that, among other things, the FSB’s Service for Combating Terrorism is located there.

The gap between the detention and the transfer may indicate torture: people detained by the FSB often say that torture takes place precisely during this interval, including in operatives’ cars, human rights defenders interviewed by The Insider note.
