I left in 2022, before the mobilization even began; my mom stayed behind at home. She supported, and still supports, my decision in every way and is herself completely against the war. The region is on the border, so there are often air raid alerts in my hometown, and things regularly explode in the sky. I worry about my mom, but she usually talks about it with humor. And it does not affect her anti-war stance in any way.

That is one reason why every single time I am astonished by “anti-war Russians disillusioned with Ukraine.” Did they really think this was a war of demons against all-forgiving angels? Did they really believe that people being bombed every day should not strike targets on Russian territory out of concern for Russians? Would they also have stopped supporting the countries of the anti-Hitler coalition if they had learned those countries were bombing enemy cities?

I wish victory to Ukraine not because only saints live there, but because the Russian army attacked them and wants to destroy them. They are right because they are fighting invaders, not because they wage war like knights and shake the enemy’s hand after a duel. I understand that people in the villages of Belgorod region are in no mood for these arguments, but believe me, those whom they are trying to destroy and whose loved ones are being killed every day are even less in the mood to worry about the environment in Tuapse.
