Reports filed against 15 members of the Irkutsk Communist Party for taking part in unauthorized actions on May 1

This was reported to Kommersant by Sergei Levchenko, first secretary of the Irkutsk regional committee and a State Duma deputy.

According to him, the Interior Ministry prepared an entire list of “violators,” although it did not include all participants in the May Day events.

“Apparently, this affected those whom police officers were able to identify in the numerous photo and video recordings they made,” Levchenko noted.

The Communist Party tried to coordinate with the Irkutsk city administration a rally at the Lenin monument, a march to the Eternal Flame memorial with a flower-laying ceremony, and a motor rally through the city center, but officials did not approve the holiday actions.

“We came to the Lenin monument anyway, because the May Day rally is a tradition. Over the past 33 years, we have never once been banned from holding this event,” Levchenko explained.

According to him, there was no one in the square except security forces and a man who introduced himself as a city administration employee and tried to interfere with the action. The communists laid flowers and delivered several speeches “without using any equipment.”

Levchenko believes the security forces’ activity is connected to “the policies of the region’s leaders”: Governor Igor Kobzev and the United Russia branch he heads have faced falling ratings, which is “an alarming signal on the eve of the federal elections.”

“That is why such methods of struggle are being used,” the Communist Party member is convinced.
