EU preparing for “potential” talks with Putin, FT reports

A senior source told the publication this.

European Council President António Costa said that, in his view, the European Union has the “potential” for talks with Vladimir Putin and that the bloc has the support of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on this issue.

“I am holding talks with the leaders of the 27 EU countries to determine the best way to organize this and identify what we need to discuss effectively with Russia when the right moment comes,” Costa said.

At the summit of EU leaders in Cyprus last month, Zelensky “urged us to be ready to make a positive contribution to the negotiations,” Costa added.

“Yes, there is potential (for talks with Putin — ed. note). (But — ed. note.) at the moment, no one sees any signs that Russia wants to engage effectively in serious negotiations,” Costa said at an event at the European University Institute in Florence.

Zelensky’s office confirmed to the Financial Times that possible EU talks with Putin had been discussed with Costa, but said they must be coordinated in such a way as to demonstrate a united European voice and put pressure on Russia.
