Chechnya says it has “reunited” more than half of couples divorced since 2017

Chechnya says it has “reunited” 3,038 divorced couples out of 6,020 “identified” since 2017. State TV channel Grozny reported this, citing data from the Commission for Harmonization of Marital and Family Relations, writes The Insider.

The commission was created on July 4, 2017, at the initiative of Ramzan Kadyrov and, it is claimed, works to preserve families, protect the interests of children, and “strengthen traditional family values.” According to the authorities, over 9 years the commission has held 25,124 “events.”

Residents of Chechnya who had dealings with the commission previously told Kavkazsky Uzel that the conversations resembled interrogations, and participants were questioned about their private lives and family conflicts.

One of the outlet’s interlocutors said the commission persuaded her to return to her husband and be more tolerant of her mother-in-law despite the conflict in the family. Another woman said that when she tried to get divorced, she faced pressure from her husband’s relatives and commission members.
