In Narva on the border with Russia, a portrait of the Russian president was hung with the words “Putin is a war criminal”

The portrait appeared on the wall of the castle housing the Narva Museum at midnight on May 9. It can be seen from the other side of the river, from the Russian town of Ivangorod, where a праздничный concert is held on Victory Day along the embankment.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, the Narva Museum has held this action every year on May 9.

A portrait with the words “Putin is a war criminal” was hung on the castle walls in 2023 and 2024. In 2025, the portrait was different: Putin depicted as Hitler.

In Russia, because of the actions involving portraits of Putin, Narva Museum director Maria Smorzhevskikh-Smirnova was sentenced in absentia to 10 years in a penal colony after being found guilty of spreading “fakes” about the Russian army and “rehabilitating Nazism.”
