“Do not cover up your crimes with the people’s Victory.” 85-year-old Siege survivor Lyudmila Vasilyeva came out with this placard. She was taken to the police

Eighty-five-year-old Lyudmila Vasilyeva, who survived the Siege of Leningrad as a child, came to the Solovetsky Stone in St. Petersburg on May 9 with a placard reading: “Do not cover up your crimes with the people’s Victory.” Vasilyeva also brought a bouquet of daisies and a candle to the memorial to GULAG prisoners.

Vasilyeva and a journalist covering the action were taken to the police. The St. Petersburg resident was soon released without a report being drawn up; she refused to write an explanation, citing the article of the Constitution that states that “no one is obliged to testify against himself.”

In March 2026, Vasilyeva recorded a video appeal calling for quiet protest and showing a daisy, “a simple flower of peace.”
