Nine EU countries have proposed stripping the IOC of European funding over the admission of Russia and Belarus to international competitions

Estonia, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Sweden, Romania, Finland, and Denmark appealed to the European Commission with a proposal to exclude the IOC and other sports organizations that admit Russia and Belarus to international competitions from EU funding programs, ERR writes.

The proposed restrictions would also apply to the International Fencing Federation and the International Swimming Federation. This includes funding through the Erasmus+ program.

With full respect for the autonomy of sports organizations, EU countries call on international sports bodies to uphold the principles of human rights, the rule of law, and peaceful relations between states,

the statement says.

The trigger was the IOC Executive Board’s July 7 decision to conditionally reinstate the membership of the Russian Olympic Committee, which had been suspended since October 12, 2023.
