The war through the eyes of Meduza readers. Today we are publishing a letter from Sergey in Melitopol
It is very painful to watch and read about the shelling of Ukrainian territory and about civilian casualties. I live on the other side of the line of demarcation, in the [Russian-controlled part] of Zaporizhzhia region. I want to convey the situation that is happening here, because it is not covered anywhere, only very superficially.
[…] Back in April-May, Ukrainian drones chose civilian infrastructure as their target. It all began with strikes on ordinary fuel tankers that delivered fuel to civilian gas stations. In May-June they started hitting trucks bringing food products into the region. Since April, damage has been systematically inflicted on electrical substations that supply civilian facilities. In June they began hitting ordinary civilian cars […]. In July they started hitting trucks in parking lots, and it does not matter whether they are empty or carrying goods. They also strike ordinary food deliveries to stores, small vans and Gazelles. Many guys have been killed, ordinary drivers and delivery workers.
Now they have started hitting wholesale food depots where there have never been military facilities anywhere nearby, thereby causing food shortages. They struck a dairy plant in Melitopol. They hit ambulances, municipal transport, scheduled buses, burn wheat fields, and so on. And all this happens under the slogan: “Нашi хлопчики нiколи не бʼють по цивiльних”. Well, they do. And they do it deliberately. And it was specifically the Ukrainian military that violated the parity in strikes on civilians that had existed throughout four years of military action.
Especially bewildering is the joy of some residents on the Ukrainian side: “Serves you right!” I have a question: people, what exactly are you rejoicing over? Do you really not understand that by such actions the leadership of Ukraine and its direct handlers are deliberately escalating the situation, taking the war to a new level, and forcing Russia into retaliatory actions, while it is precisely you who are under attack, and nobody gives a damn about you. The main thing is large-scale casualties and destruction, mournful photos, pompous speeches, and promises to turn Moscow into an island! I really want people to know what is actually happening and why things are the way they are now. Peace and patience to all of us.
