A St. Petersburg activist was arrested over Instagram and Facebook logos in a 2021 post. Because of this, he will not be able to take part in the elections
A court has arrested urban preservation activist Yaroslav Kostrov, who plans to run for the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly from A Just Russia. He was accused of displaying “extremist” symbols.
The case was triggered by a post on VKontakte of a 2021 campaign leaflet with links to Instagram and Facebook and the logos of those social networks. Kostrov’s lawyer noted that the leaflets had been approved at the time by the territorial election commission.
Kostrov did not admit guilt. He called his detention the day before “lawlessness” and linked the arrest to the elections. If the court ruling enters into force, he will not be able to run for office for a year.
