A Holy See delegation led by Cardinal Matteo Zuppi visited one of the Ukrainian camps for prisoners of war, where it reviewed the conditions in which Russian servicemen are being held.

During the visit, the cardinal met with prisoners of various nationalities and delivered a message from Pope Leo XIV:

"Pope Leo XIV said that he is praying for peace and for all prisoners to return home as soon as possible"

The issue of Russia recruiting foreign nationals to take part in the war against Ukraine was discussed separately during the meeting. Representatives of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War drew the Holy See delegation’s attention to the activities of Russian recruiters in various countries around the world, including on the African continent.

During talks with the Vatican delegation, representatives of the Coordination Headquarters stressed that humane treatment of prisoners has not only legal but also practical significance. Every Russian serviceman held in Ukrainian captivity is part of the exchange fund, and therefore increases the chances of bringing Ukrainian defenders home from Russian prisons.

The Ukrainian side also called on representatives of international organizations and religious institutions to seek access to places where Ukrainian military personnel and civilians are being held in Russia and in temporarily occupied territories, in order to be able to assess their conditions of detention.

Concluding the visit, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi prayed for the war to end as soon as possible and for all prisoners to return home.
