The Interior Ministry proposes banning the extradition from Russia of people who have been granted refugee status, temporary or political asylum in the country

"The Russian Interior Ministry has drafted a federal law 'On Amendments to Article 464 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Russian Federation.' The drafting of the bill is due to the adoption of the Federal Law 'On Granting Asylum on the Territory of the Russian Federation,'" they noted there.

The ministry added that the document was drafted to prevent Russia from extraditing, at the request of a foreign state, people who have been granted refugee status, temporary asylum, or political asylum in the country.

"At present, Paragraph 2 of Part 1 of Article 464 of the Russian Criminal Procedure Code provides for refusal to extradite a person at the request of a foreign state if that person has been granted asylum in the Russian Federation solely in connection with the possibility of persecution in that state on the grounds of race, religion, citizenship, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political beliefs," the Interior Ministry said.
