In Russia, officials want to “crank up to the max” the shutdown of servers hosting VPN services — Kod Durova
Representatives of the VPN services industry are preparing for sweeping blocks on the infrastructure of hosting providers in Russia, the outlet Kod Durova reported, citing sources.
Ahead of the second reading of the “Anti-Fraud 2.0” bill, which is being considered in the State Duma. amendments have been prepared under which Russian data centers and hosting providers will be required to proactively identify and shut down servers that provide access to blocked information.
One of the outlet’s interlocutors said this measure is not new, but now the authorities plan to “crank it up to the max” — and clearing out servers will become the main tool of censorship.
Against this backdrop, as the outlet notes, some VPN providers have begun urging users to buy long-term subscriptions.
The outlet’s source recommended that users not do this, since the likelihood of services being blocked at the hosting level is extremely high.
