EU foreign policy chief rejects Gerhard Schroeder as a negotiator with Russia

I believe that Gerhard Schroeder acts as a high-level lobbyist for Russian state-owned companies. So it is completely clear why Putin wants to see him in this role in particular: so that he would, in effect, be sitting on both sides of the negotiating table,

said Kaja Kallas at a briefing.

Kallas also answered a question about whether the EU should prepare for negotiations with Russia on how to shape Europe’s future security architecture.

She said that before speaking with Russian representatives, the EU needs to “discuss among ourselves what exactly we want to talk to her [Russia] about.”

That is exactly why there will be a meeting of foreign ministers in the Gymnich format, where we will discuss the proposals put forward for resolving the problems we have,

Kallas clarified.

The meeting will take place at the end of May.

Kallas stressed that the European Union’s security problem is that “Russia is constantly attacking its neighbors, and the question is how we can actually prevent this.”

🔵On May 9, speaking about possible negotiations with Europe, Putin said that Gerhard Schroeder could be the “preferred” negotiator. At the same time, he allowed for the possibility of dialogue with another leader who “has not said nasty things about us.”

Negotiator Rejected, Agenda Still Missing

Kallas rejected Schroeder and said the EU must first agree what to discuss.

So far, only the refusal is ready.
