Raised in a Baptist family, Viktor Butsykin was supposed to be an example for others by adhering to Christian values. But after finding himself in a difficult financial situation, he decided that the best way out of it was to go fight for money.

In the army, he was incredibly lucky to be assigned to rear-area service as a mechanic and not see the horrors of combat on the front line. When his unit was transferred from Kherson region to Donbas, Viktor saw Bakhmut, destroyed by the Russian army, and reached an unequivocal conclusion about the war:

“This is hell on earth, which Russian people are creating against Ukrainians”

After an unsuccessful attempt to be discharged following an injury, Butsykin ended up among assault troops. Fighting “for real” was not part of the young man’s plans and contradicted his views, so he chose to surrender to the Ukrainians at the first opportunity.
