African citizens continue to suffer from Russian soldier recruitment practices.

The wife of Zimbabwean citizen Vheda Joseph recorded a video appeal in which she said that her 51-year-old husband went to Russia to earn money, but ended up in the war. The recruiter promised legal employment and civilian work, but, as often happens, it was a classic scheme for tricking foreigners. Vheda was given a contract to sign in Russian without any translation, assuring him that it was an ordinary employment agreement. On 08.06.2026, Vheda signed the document and effectively fell into the deadly slavery of the Russian Ministry of Defense. After that, he was sent to Ukraine. The last time he contacted his family was on 17.07.2026.

The poorer the country, the more actively Russian recruiters operate there. At the moment, we have personal data on almost 3,000 citizens of African states recruited by the Russian Armed Forces to take part in the war. At least 486 of them have already been killed. Dozens of Africans from 17 countries on the continent are also in Ukrainian captivity.

Another reminder to foreign citizens that trips to Russia "for work" usually end with being sent into assault operations.

Employment Contract With No Translation

A Zimbabwean went for work, signed a Russian contract, and landed in the war.

Employment arrived looking a lot like assault duty.
